Reconstructions of Traumatic Lacrimal Canalicular Lacerations:A 5 Years Experience

Background:Theaimofthisstudyistoevaluatethedemographicandepidemiologicaldata,clinicalfeaturesandsurgical outcomesoflacrimalcanalicularlacerations.Methods:Thechartsofallpatientswhoappliedtoouremergencydepartmentwith eyelidlacerationfrom2008to2013werereviewedretrospectively.Demographicandepidemiologicaldata,clinicalcharacteristics, treatmentoutcomes,simultaneousinjuriesandcomplicationsofpatientswhounderwentcanalicularlacerationrepairsurgerywere analyzed.Results:Atotalof556patientswereidentifiedwithaneyelidlaceration,andin42(7.55%)ofthesepatients44lacrimal canalicular lacerations were detected. The average age was 26.16±18.42 (range 5 to 78) years and mean follow-up time was 17.62±6.62months(range12-42months).Themale-to-femaleratiowas5.3-1.Thelowercanaliculuswasinvolvedin33patients (78.57%),theupperin7patients(16.6%),and2patients(4.76%)hadbicanalicularinvolvement.Themostcommonetiologyof canalicularlacerationwasassault(n=16,38.1%)followedbytrafficaccidents(n=8,19.05%).In28patients(66.67%)surgery wasperformedwithin24hoursandin14patients(33.33%)surgerywasperformedbetween24hoursand6days.In32patients (76.2%)directanatomosisandin10patients(23.8%)indirectanastomosiswasperformed.Tubeswereremovedafterameantime of5.8±2.8months.Anatomicsuccesswas96.87%,whilefunctionalsuccesswas92.85%.Complicationsweredetectedin3cases: twopatientshadearlytubeextrusionsandinpatienthadpunctalslits.Conclusion:Reconstructionoftraumaticlacrimalcanalicular lacerationswithstentinggivesgoodresultsatlong-termfollowup.TheMini-Monokatubeisasafe,simple,effectivemethodwith fewcomplications
